THE CLASS SAFARI
INDIVIDUAL assignment IN THE COURSE DESIGNING USER EXPERIENCE AT M.SC. INTERACTION DESIGN AT CHALMERS, 2014.
Tram nr 11 in Gothenburg runs from Bergsjön to Saltholmen through the City Center which represents the contradictories when it comes to societal classes and social well-being. By using the tram as a symbol for injustice an app for smartphones are created together with provocative marketing in the context in and around the tram to highlight the situation. The information is formed by using critical design that uses GPS and objectifies people and contexts along the way, comparable to animals in a zoo. This is made to provoke and raise awareness to the subject through a here-recurring sequential event. However, the solution creates different trajectories for different societal classes and does break if people don't move outside their own sphere.
The process when designing this concept started with me indentifying an issue that was important for me as a person which is equality. Then I asked myself were in my everyday life I encounter injustice without event thinking about it. The answer came when I took my tram downtown and realized that a huge number of people share this tram and most of them have never gone the entire route with it. I started the process by riding tram nr 11 to its end stations which is one of the most wealthy vs one of the most poor. It felt like I was on a ride on the zoo watching different attractions or trapped animals, were the analogy to the safari was born. Then an iterative process led to the concept of The Class Safari.
